Learning-by-exporting: do firm characteristics matter? Evidence from Argentinian panel data
نویسندگان
چکیده
We identify characteristics that affect firms’ ability to learn from their export activities. Our analysis employs propensity score matching (PSM) techniques and GMM regressions on a panel of Argentinian firms spanning 1992-2001. Characteristics we find important to learning-by-exporting are: foreign ownership, intensive use of imported inputs, a skilled workforce and small firm size. Finally, firms that are new to exporting seem to experience particularly high productivity gains but begin enjoying them before entering into the export market. ∗We thank Jens Arnold for supplying the original Stata code used to implement the Propensity Score Matching Technique. We also thank Valeria Arza, Rob Elliott and Gabriel Yoguel for their helpful comments. Any shortcomings are our own. †Corresponding author: Department of Economics, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, B15 2TT, United Kingdom, [email protected]

Does Exporting Lead to Better Performance ?
Exporting involves sunk costs, so some firms export whilst others do not. This proposition derives from a number of models of firm behaviour and has been exposed to microeconometric analysis. Evidence from the latter suggests that exporting firms are generally more productive than non-exporters; they self-select in that they are more productive before they enter export markets; but entry does n...
متن کاملHypothesis: Direct Evidence from UK Firms
Case study evidence suggests that exporting firms learn from their clients. But econometric evidence, mostly using exporting and TFP growth, is mixed. We use a UK panel data set with firm-level information on exporting and productivity. Our innovation is that we also have direct data on the sources of learning (in this case about new technologies). Controlling for fixed effects we have two main...
متن کاملINTERNATIONAL TRADE AND FIRM PRODUCTIVITY WITHIN THE ITALIAN MANUFACTURING SECTOR: Self-Selection or Learning-by-Exporting?
The ongoing process of international economic integration has induced several academic researchers and policy makers to deepen increasingly issues about the relationship between international trade and economic growth. More in particular, the attention is increasingly focusing on the link between exporting and firm performance, acknowledging the extreme relevance of ‘firm heterogeneity’. This p...
متن کامل“Export Performances and Export Learning in the Tunisian manufacturing Industry: Evidence from Firm Panel Data”
As demonstrated in recent empirical litterature on firms’export performances, the international market for goods acts as a screen that selects firms access according to both internal and external factors influencing their productivity. This paper focuses particularly on production costs as a key factor that differenciates non exporting from exporting firms. In a first stage, a general framework...
متن کاملInteraction between exporting and productivity at firm level: Evidence from the UK chemical industry
This paper investigates the interaction between exporting and productivity at firm level , using a panel of firms in UK chemical industry which is highly technology intensive and the largest UK manufacturing exporter. We find exporters are on average smaller but more productive than non-exporters. Applying empirical techniques from Bernard and Jensen(2001) and Kraay(1999), we find the superior ...
